Statewide Economic Impact

Maine Airports

Recognizing the vital role aviation plays in Maine's economy, the Maine Department of Transportation commissioned an economic impact study to quantify the contributions of the state's airports. This study utilized the IMPLAN modeling system to analyze how aviation activity supports jobs, income, and overall economic output across Maine's industries.

The findings demonstrate that Maine's 35 public-use airports generate thousands of jobs, millions in earnings, and contribute significantly to state and local tax revenues. These impacts extend beyond airport operations, influencing businesses, tourism, and broader economic growth. By measuring direct, indirect, and total impacts, the study provides a comprehensive view of aviation's economic footprint in Maine.

The results of this study have been instrumental in advocating for airport infrastructure investments, ensuring continued economic benefits, and strengthening Maine's connectivity and economic vitality. Both government leaders and the public have responded favorably to the study, recognizing the importance of airports in driving prosperity throughout the state.
